Local film screening: “The Throwaways”
“The Throwaways” follows homeless filmmaker and ex-felon Ira McKinley’s struggle to bring positive change to inner-city Albany. As he strives to make his voice heard and capture the stories of fellow community members, McKinley confronts his past and battles against the stigma of being formerly incarcerated. This timely piece is a call for action, addressing the impact of mass incarceration and police brutality on black males in America. Filmmakers Bhawin Suchak and Ira McKinley will hold a Q&A following the screening.

“Old Scout” with Christian Strevy
Troy Foundry Theatre’s May edition of Dark Day Mondays Free Reading Series is Film in Theatre. Enjoy a screening of three short films: “The Check” by David Girard, “Ready or Not” by Steven Clark and “Old Scout, Episode No. 38: Canoeing, what could go wrong?” before the production and filming of Christian Strevy’s episodic project “Old Scout.” It tackles the merit badges of the Cub Scouts every week on a mission to achieve the entire curriculum from Cub to Eagle in one year. This week takes on the DRAMATICS badge in which Strevy and Girard will write, direct and perform a play in the span of five days.

Employee Art Show
The exhibit, running through May 31, features works by the widely exhibited Jon Christopher Gernon whose most recent work was featured in the “Tempera: Nurture & Nature” show at the Attleboro Art Museum, Mass; clay and mixed media artist Allan Gallagher; Ink, textile and printmaking artist Kate Wolford and multimedia artist Andrew Ochal, whose work explores “the concept of value and the labels we place on ourselves and things.” Other featured artists include Ruth Channing Young and Erich Getchell.

Beyond My Battle: Art with Heart and Hope

WMHT is taking submissions of your local music memories
The local media outlet is working on a documentary and digital storytelling project, “THE SCENE,” set to premiere this summer. The film will look back on the music scene of the Capital Region during the ‘60s and ‘70s, pulling from local experience. Stories, photographs and memories of local music venues and bands can be submitted at wmht.org/thescene.

Albany Barn: Local arts zine submissions
The Artistic Betterment Committee wants fill a new zine with pages with your art! Submit drawings, photography, poetry, short pieces, comics, photos of installations and 3D works of art and just about anything else.

ONGOING: The Collaborative magazine call for art and columnist submissions
The Collaborative is always looking for submissions of art in any medium (but ultimately digitally scanned or photographed to be featured in the print issue) for our full-page gallery feature of the magazine. Artists can send their work with a short artist bio and their best point of contact to kcusack@proctors.org.

If you are an artist living and working in the Capital Region, we want to work with you. The columnist section of the magazine covers writing, music, food, film, visual arts, style, theatre, dance and the creative economy. If you would like to share a recent discovery of artistic methods or resources, an anecdote about overcoming creative challenges, a “how-to” or epiphany, send a column submission of roughly 500 words to dking@proctors.org or kcusack@proctors.org. The columnist section is a resource for artists to learn from and connect with one another, come be a part of it.

ONGOING: Call for muralists: Albany Center Gallery
Always on the hunt for talented artists for mural painting and teaching around the Capital Region. The aim is to create beautiful, thoughtful and educational paintings to uplift and inspire local communities.

Submit resume and artwork samples with the artist contact information, resume, artwork samples (up to 10 digital images), mock-up images of your murals (if you have them, not required), a summary of your interest and passion about this mural program and a description of our previous experiences in the arts.

The Arts Center of the Capital Region: Fall class proposal submissions
The Arts Center in Troy is currently accepting class proposals through June 1 in the arts genres of painting, drawing, mixed media, fiber arts, woodworking, jewelry, printmaking, dance/movement, performing arts, digital arts, specialty workshops, culinary, photography and more.

Classes should take place between September 9 and December 31, 2019. Proposal acceptance is based on studio availability, student need and proposal strength. Both short format and long format classes accepted (ex. Single day workshops or 2-10 week classes based on your curriculum.) All public classes scheduled are enrollment-based and must meet minimum enrollment in order to run.

Sand Lake Center for the Arts announces One Act Play Festival 2020 submissions
The Sand Lake Center for the Arts in Averill park is calling for submissions of one-act plays to their One Act Play Festival (January 9-12, 2020) by July 1.

Typed entries must be unpublished, not professionally produced and run from 10-15 minutes with a front page featuring your name, address, phone number(s) and email address. Do not include personal identification on other pages. Setting should be made clear in the exposition or the dialogue of the play. Fewer than five characters are recommended and minimal set pieces and costumes are essential. All themes and subject matters are welcome, from G to PG-13 ratings. No more than two submissions per playwright. All playwrights will be notified of decisions by Sept 2019.

Residents of one of the following counties are eligible to submit: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Washington or the areas of Bennington, North Adams, and Pittsfield. There is no entry fee. Royalties will not be paid.
